Dave the DiverChineseHow to Catch Fish in Dave the Diver
A complete fishing guide: which tool to bring per target, how capture quality works, and what each zone of the Blue Hole and Glacial Area offers — from harpoon basics to live-capture for FishMon and 3-star cards.
- Harpoon for common fish; net gun, tranquilizer, or capture pods for non-lethal 3-star captures.
- Bug net is required for seahorses and certain small species.
- Use the fish collection tracker to check off each species as you complete it.

Capture tools
Your tool decides what you can catch and at what quality. The harpoon is the default weapon and lethal; the net gun and capture pods are non-lethal and preserve a higher card rank; the tranquilizer weakens fish without killing them; the bug net is mandatory for seahorses; and crab traps passively catch crabs over time.
- Harpoon: lethal, default
- Net gun / capture pods: non-lethal, 3-star safe
- Bug net: seahorses and small species
- Crab traps: passive crab collection

Capture quality
Every catch is rated from one to three stars. Lethal kills usually yield a ★ catch, while non-lethal methods improve the odds of ★★ and ★★★. The best rank you have ever caught of a species is locked in for its Marinca card, so always aim for a non-lethal capture if you want the gold card.
- ★: lethal kill
- ★★/★★★: non-lethal capture
- Best rank is locked into the card

Zones at a glance
Shallows hold the bulk of common species and are the safest place to practice non-lethal capture. Medium depth adds bigger reef fish, depths add large and boss-class catches, the Glacial Zone and Glacier Passage add polar species, and the Hydrothermal Vents hold rare deep-sea fish. Each zone's fish page lists its exact active time and rank.
- Shallows: common species, safe practice
- Depths: large fish and boss-class catches
- Glacial + Hydrothermal: polar and rare deep-sea fish
